The basics

Why “one bag per lawn” doesn’t really work

Fertilizer bags aren’t standardized the way you’d hope. A 24-0-4 bag and a 10-0-10 bag can look almost identical on the shelf, but they deliver very different amounts of actual nutrient to your lawn per pound of product. Using a flat “one bag covers X square feet” rule ignores that difference completely, which is how lawns end up either under-fed or scorched with fertilizer burn.

This calculator works backward from what actually matters: how much real nitrogen your lawn needs, and how concentrated your specific bag is. Enter your lawn size and the N-P-K numbers printed on the bag, and it tells you exactly how much product to put down and how many bags to buy.

What those three numbers on the bag actually mean

Every fertilizer bag lists three numbers in the same order — Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium — and each one does a different job for your lawn.

The formula behind the numbers

Here’s the actual math the calculator runs, so you can see exactly where the numbers come from:

Reading a bag label 24 – 0 – 4 24% N 0% P 4% K by weight of the total bag A 24-0-4 bag is 24% actual nitrogen by weight — the rest is filler, potassium, and other ingredients.
The calculation (Area ÷ 1,000) × Target N ÷ (Bag’s N% ÷ 100) = lbs of product needed Example: 5,000 sq ft, 1 lb N target, 24% N bag → ~20.8 lbs of product The lower the N%, the more product you need to hit the same actual nitrogen target — this is why bag concentration matters more than bag price alone.

How much nitrogen does your lawn actually need?

The calculator defaults to 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft, which is a widely used standard for a single routine feeding on most home lawns. That said, the right target for your yard depends on your grass type, the season, and how the lawn is doing:

  • Routine maintenance feeding — around 1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft is a safe, commonly used rate
  • Thin or recovering lawns — some guides suggest slightly higher rates, but going too high risks burning the grass rather than helping it
  • Most lawns need several feedings per year, not just one — this calculator works out a single application, so run it again each time you feed

Before you spread

  • Use a broadcast or drop spreader for even coverage — hand-spreading almost always leaves stripes or hot spots
  • Sweep any fertilizer that lands on sidewalks or driveways back onto the lawn — it washes into storm drains otherwise
  • Water lightly after applying granular fertilizer to activate it and rinse it off the grass blades
  • Avoid applying right before heavy rain — it washes nutrients away before your lawn can use them
  • Skip fertilizing a dormant or drought-stressed lawn; it can’t take up the nutrients and you risk burning it

How much fertilizer do I need per 1,000 square feet?

It depends entirely on your bag’s nitrogen percentage, not just the square footage. To deliver a standard 1 lb of actual nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft using a 24% nitrogen bag, you’d need about 4.2 lbs of product. A weaker 10% nitrogen bag would need 10 lbs to hit the same target. What do the N-P-K numbers on a fertilizer bag mean?

They’re the percentage by weight of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium in the bag, always listed in that order. Nitrogen drives green, leafy growth, phosphorus supports root development, and potassium helps the grass handle stress, drought, and disease.

How often should I fertilize my lawn?

Most home lawns are fed every 4 to 6 weeks during the active growing season, though the right schedule varies by grass type and climate. This calculator works out one application at a time — run it again for each feeding using the same lawn area.

Can I fertilize a lawn I just seeded or sodded?

Not right away. New seed needs to germinate and establish roots before it can handle a standard feeding, and fresh sod typically needs a few weeks to root into the soil. Wait until the new grass is established before applying a full-strength application.

Can I use too much fertilizer?

Yes, and it’s one of the most common lawn care mistakes. Over-applying nitrogen can scorch and yellow the grass instead of helping it, and excess runs off into storm drains rather than being absorbed. Sticking to a calculated target based on your bag’s actual N% avoids this.

Do I need to water my lawn after fertilizing?

For granular fertilizer, yes — a light watering after application helps activate the product and rinses any granules off the grass blades, which reduces the risk of burning.
